Hey guys, kinda new here on the forums, been reading a lot but never really posted, so far you guys have answered most of my questions and all i had to do was ask mr. "Search" button. Very helpful
So I bought my first tracker and looking to turbo it. Its a '94 8vl. 4x4 2dr. with nothing but an intake and flowmaster exhaust. So far ive decieded to go with a T25 turbo, i dont want anything huge sence ill be running on stock internals.. ie. 6-7psi max.
Now onto my main question. How can i adapt this turbo to my block. I could either go with turbine tech, which has been most recommended here and has actually been very good on customer service. But they are quite expensive, and is this mainly my ownly route? or would i just be better off making my own. It will NOT be my first day on the job using a welder, but i do not have an mandrel pipe bender so either way im stuck, maybe someone happens to have a spare manifold? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Id like to get this project underway as soon as possible. Thanks!
~Jeremy
There's a lot of things you should sort out before going to deep. What are you going to run for fuel management, piggyback, standalone and what make? Are you going to upgrade injectors, fuel pump? Are you going to run an intercooler and if so what type and where will you mount it and how will you route the piping? Are you going to run a oil cooler? The manifold will probably be the least of your worries.
ah yes! fuel management im not to sure about the makes and models, this is all pretty much new to me and id love to learn, im only 20. Injectors are a must, i dont think they've ever been replaced on my tracker before. the fuel pump seems good, i ripped it out and checked it last weekend on the 30th. Would a new pump be necessary for low boost? The radiator will need to be replaces soon anyways and the FMIC for now is kinda the least of my worries, if anything id say pick up an ebay special, but im definatly looking into an oil cooler, and about the oil lines to and from the turbo? i still need to figure out where im going to run them.. I still need to d a lot of research before i tackle this project, especially sence it will be my first! Im mainly stressing about the turbo manifold because im not sure where i can pick one up unless i have to make my own, what good is a turbo if i cant have a good seal. plus what size tubing? just go 1/4" bigger than stock and call it a day? ..ahhh soo many angles that need to be worked out.. hopefully i can have most of my questions answered by the end of this month
sure, how much money do you want to spend, speed costs and only money limits the results. It also dictates what level you want to reach.
also many many issues.
If after finding out how much it costs or how much labor it takes ,you might just buy a real turbo car.
Daily driver, off road only, race only?
utility is the first question.
then there is the short term plan followed by a future goal. (start in correct direction)
IMHO:
i would not run a turbo without a custom EMS.
well, first off id really only like to spend 1 - 1.2k at most, and i can do all the labor. I didnt look into how much megasquirt is yet, but im pretty sure i wont even need most of its functions.
yes, this would be a daily driver/winter beater. Id just like a little extra kick when i have toubles getting up hills in 5th gear on the highway.
Thanks for recommending me some books to read, im all for it sence this is what id really like to do for a career someday, ill definatly check them out. hah junkyard turbo's.. sounds exactly what im looking for, nothing full race ready, atleast not yet
fuel management: megasquirt or any other recommendations i will gladly check out
Injectors: 24-32lbs?
FMIC: Ebay special, but would still need custom tubing
Oil Cooler, and new oil lines to and from turbo
Fuel pump: anything off a V8 i could only imagine will do fine for time being
all this i figure id be close to my spending limits for sure
haha nice man, and with detailed pictures! If you ever plan on making another manifold, id buy the one you're using from ya. What intercooler is that? o.O
I plan on making a few ebay specials to cut some costs, 5k is a decent amount of work put in
If you're still running stock internals, how long do you think the motor will last at 10psi?
But then again, id like to see arround 130hp too! so im willing to push the limits a bit..
A very well renowned tuner from Melbourne tuned it and he is swayed far towards safe tunes that have a buffer zone in case of a bad batch of fuel. I only wanted to put in about 7psi, but I watched him do the tune and he asked if I wanted to go higher because he was confident the motor could do it. At 10psi there isn't any knock, I have a 3 degree buffer zone in case of bad fuel and we lowered the rev limiter to 6000, so i'm pretty sure it'll last a while.
Anyways, I have a spare I'm going to start putting together a lower compression and stronger bottom end, chuck that in and squeeze in a litty bit more boost
Intercooler is an ebay special, fits perfect though. Turbo was ebay, fuel reg was ebay, bov was ebay, fuel pump was ebay, exhaust was ebay, intercooler pipe kit was ebay.................. yeah, ebay is good!
Manifold all up cost $150. I just got 90 degree buttweld fittings, then cut and shut them to suit. I made it first. I took out the extractors, positioned the turbo, tacked the two flanges together then put the extractors back in so I could slowly chip away at it whilst still having a car to drive. Used my spare motor as a jig of sorts to stop the flange from warping.
