Default Broken power steering

Hi, I've just had the belt on the power steering in my '91 vitara break. I drove the car for about 100km without the power steering and now that I've taken it in to the mechanics for a new belt they've told me that because I was driving it without the power steering working that's damaged some other components in the car.
That sounds strange to me, how could that happen? and what could be damaged?

Any suggestions or answers would be great thanks!
