Default dead 1993 tracker

my tracker died. i was driving and it started sputtering, them it would run ok. it did it a couple of time. got home. run good for the next couple of days. i then filled the gas up. it died 5 minutes later. i figure i got dirty gas because the tanker was filling the tanks. i changed the fuel filter. won't start. checked the spark. no spark. power at coil. changed coil spark plug. no spark check fuse. it's ok. changed coil no spark. HELP

NO SPARK! 8 valve or 16V ?
possibles.
in no order.
Bad CAS sender in the DIZZY, very very very rare.
bad ECU, common.
bad ignitor ( can be tested easy , on car with coil making spark) ask me.
bad coil.

test: key on , no start, does CEL lamp come on.?


all 15amp fuses must be good. under left knee. not just look good ,be good.

the main relay must pull in , this can be determined by listen for fuel pump buzzz.
it buzzes for 3 seconds at key on.
just listen at gas cap filler neck , cap off.
only 3 seconds it runs each key on , and now start.
can repeat over and over.

if Pump runs , I know you have Main relay and you now have power to all majors.

it also feeds the coil so Im sure pump has power from Main relay.
best guess.
I bet ECU CEL does not light. up at key on.

if it does not ECU is out to lunch (no return) or lamp is bad.

if lamp comes on , then pull codes. regardless if or if not you have pending codes.
hint: even if cel lamp is off while driving, it must show code 12 or ecu is toast.

click >> ECU

try TEST 1 and 2 , 3 cant be done, car dont run.

the check engine lite don't work. i didn't know it existed till now. it never worked since i got the truck last fall. i changed the bulb. it still doesn't work. HELP

and you are sure all fuses are good , especially above left knee ?
do all the the other lamps light up , besides the dead CEL lamp?
all the other idiot lamps, ? on the whole top row, up to 7 lamps in a row.

if they do glow then?

looks like ECU is bad.

its easy to pull, and you might fix it for $3 too.

pull left speaker cover to see it (and speaker)
then remove 2 screws on bottom of it.
then slide it to rear, then depress connector locks (do not force any sidekick connectors that ALL have locks, every one i have seen).
pull ecu. pop lid, see smoke under lid?
sell blown caps (big cans) see slit cans, see juice next to cans, etc.
bingo.


the ECU can glow its CEL (test) even on my bench , with no sensors nothing connected.
all i do is apply 12vdc battery/ground to ECU and with a lamp connected properly and CEL glows. 4 connections and CEL test works on this ecu. 2 power,2 cell leads.
This glowing says, Im alive and living in Kansas, ready for a tornado.

there is a another test you can do for the lamp, with the ecu pulled.

there is 2 connectors on ecu.
green is B
White is A.


ecu out.
place a jumper wire from B13 to ground.(at harness plugs removed from ECU)

wires away from you looking at :
------B con. pins.Green--------
1-- 2-- 3--4blank5--6--7--8
9-10-11-12-13-14-15-16-17

ground is metal body, or B2 or B10 on harness above.

if unsure, the ECU pins are marked inside ECU !
grounding B13 and CEL MUST glow with key on. (key on)

or the lamp is bad the lamp socket is bad or the wiring is bad.
the cel lamp is curtial for troubleshooting, and this above is acid test for it.

do you have volt meter?
if you do, you can look at pins. B1, B7, measured to ground, ECU 12v power pins.
if you do not have power to B1 and 7 ECU will be dead as a doornail.

some cars , about 10% go dead because the main relay is dead.
one guy last week had fuse pins spread , cause somone jammed huge wires into fuse socket , damaging the fuse panel.
have a meter is crutial to many problems. not everthing is swap and fix.

you didnt answer my fuel pump buzzing question.
that test , tells me that your MAIN relay is good, see?

for now tell me how may lamps light up on key on. (no start.)

cel is on all kicks , 89 to present, and most other cars , some back to 88 jeep. etc.


that out to get you on track (no pun)

i like to give a list of things to do ,that way you dont have to do 5mins work then wait for ever to something else. its faster.

what kind of tools you got, any?
voltmeter ,dmm ,digital volt ohm meter ( harbor freight has em on sell again $2.99 again)
dirt cheap, gawd bless those Chinese. I got 4 of em, one in each truck.

if you have a volt-ohm meter you can test each fuse .(using Rx1 range for continuity)

you can walk the meter down the fuse box on volts scale and be sure each fuse is putting out 12vdc. <<< an acid test. rubber meets road.
