Default 8V verses 16V pros & cons

I was just wondering why both 8V & 16V were offered in Trackicks. Other than the fact that the 16V could suffer valve damage if the belt breaks, what are the main differences (beside # of valves) between the two and why would you choose one verses the other.
I purchased mine (1996 16V) and did not realize that there was another engine option until after I had it home.

the other engine option on 96 is 1.8Liter not valve.

the 16v engine is mostly (more horse power) is to push around the heavier body of a 4 door vehicle or for more performce in general.

the 8v is less stressed can could last longer, and may give better fuel economy if driven correctly.

its just a power thing.
the 1.8L is a quality thing, chain driven cam . Nice rig, if I wanted a DD , that is what id get, but mine is for local and offroad only uses or if a cold snap hits.

Nothing wrong with 16v tbelt just respect it and change it when due.
the wrecking yards of full of 16V's with bad belts and blown engines.

so if you blow yours, the spares are blown too. nice mix.

I cant wait for the new tough Tbelts come out, HSC or some such name.
rumor is 2 times , life, ( nice idea , late coming)

jtgh, what are your thoughts on the 2.0l Vitara engines? Looks like they're derived from the 1.8L?

Also, to add, initially the 16v model wasn't offered, it wasn't until about 1995 or so correct?

Are saying that if the 8v engine belt flies off while driving that you won't bend valves?? This is my first 8v engine, so forgive the seemingly silly questions,John

that's correct belt flies, you walk but engine will be happy as a clam.

not silly , i have DOHC miata that is free running and few DOHC's are.
in usa 16v is option on all 92-95.
other countries, are different.

2.0L gas parts look just like 1.8L to me. same engineer for sure and same base design.

I think on engines with chain, you dont want chain to break.
any of them. 3 there are.

Just for comparison, what is the HP rating for:
1.6 L 8V
1.6 L 16V
1.8 L
2.0 L
and can any of these be interchanged with only a bolt-up to the trans in a 1996 2DR.
Thanks,
Bear

Great chart..Thank you.
To clear it up, I was wondering if a 1.8L could be put in a tracker with a 1.6L without to much trouble. I am guessing that I would need the computer and wiring harness and sensors. I did not know if the 1.6/1.8 used the same manual trans/transfer case. My engine is still good, but so would a little more HP.
