Default error codes

I borrowed a code reader because my service engine soon light is on and stays on. By the way, on this forum they talk about check engine light (cel), is this the same as ses light? The reader said 5 codes as follows, p0136, p0740, p0136 pending,p0400 pending, p0740 pending. why the duplicates? Next was mil on, monitors incomplete, catlyst, evap, EGR. Monitors ready were misfire,fuel,comp,o2 snsr, o2 heater. What do I have here? Cost to fix, ease to fix? Thanks in advance.

96 or newer we have here, care to tell displacment too? 1.6 or 1.8 ?
Heinz 57 varietes on kicks. (no joke world wide)
for get dupicates. just a scanner hickup. (or is it pending versas set)

p0136, heater bad rear oxygen sensor. ( believe it.) new rear sensor needed .
p0740, Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction TCC is slipping or other related.
p0400 , EGR monitor failed. I think this is real. clean it and the whole EGR path.

the tcc is the most complex.
can be just you were driving funny and fooled it.
or TCC is bad.
TCC relay is bad, or TCC solenoid in tranny is bad , wiring to each and other serious tranny problems ( automatics are complex and can be a real pain to diagnose)

click my sig link then egr dreaded link.

the scanner shows HARD fails and Pending, they are all probably real.
Pendings are just below the legal EPA limit. nothing more.

In the manual they say fix the primary fails first and then others can go away by self.

in your case oxy heater is real , it never gets that wrong, it can see the heater is open circuited !
the TCC , Id just just go for a Tranny full flush and pray.

EGR> on this car 96 or newer , the EGR monitors are very accurate , unlike the older.
it is more sensative but more accurate. I'd believe it.
but for not I recommonded , making sure it is not stuck open.
failures of EGR:
1: stuck open and can really messup drive-abillity and power.
2: clogged completely anywhere in EGR exhaust path.
3: partial clog , on same #2 path. see EGR tube , see where it goes to Plenum , it will be clogged there too. (or reduced)

My bad, this is a 98 1.6 16v chevy tracker. I am ready to sell already. I was told egr is 189.00, o2 sensor is 120.00. The motor has 162,000 miles on it. Am I better off looking for a another motor? I have had this car 2 months and very disappointed so far. So list the order I should procede. Thanks

I got a p0400 the other day too, and was quoted $625 to fix it (replacing egr and other stuff). I fixed it for about 50 cents worth of carb cleaner and 20 minutes of my time. Search for P0400 and EGR and you'll find the threads and the fixes. Start with the easy one (cleaning out the vacume lines) and see if it does the trick. Did for me!

dont throw towl yet!
do you need to pass smog test , no? if no let 740 rot.
rear OXY does NOT figure in AFR (airfuelratio or mpg)
just fix the ones that will give you good MPG and save money.
sound good?
you could ignore TCC too. if it shifts ok any you are happy, just
do normal maintence on engine and tranny.

but that EGR can be a pistol. The valve is usually OK and just dirty.
basically , clean it , the Tube and the plenum port hole.

we have POSTs from 3 people just this week & fixed it for free.

it is not complicated , just a boring little job.

CLICK>>> EGR

above photo at the bottom is your plenum port. see green tie wrap.
make path for wrap clean.

1: clean EGR valve ( removed) 1 hr.
2: clean the EGR tube. 15min.
3: clean plenum port 10min.
in below photo ,clean part 1 dirty end and the top nipple hole (very tiny going up to part 4
then clean part 9 the tube and last the plenum port.
