Default Bad ECM?

I have a 1992 Tracker 1.6, Manual, 2wd. I just bought it and it idles rough and hard cold starting.
So picked up a Chilton repair manual. With the key on motor not running the check engine light stayes on. I jumped between terminal B-C and no change, light did'nt flash. If im reading this correctly thats ECM failure. Sound right to you guys?
Thanks for any and all advice.

Look @ jtgh's signature and go to carfix stuff to read, under the heading, Problems see Dead ECU.

Post Hard Starting 2002

There are many things you should replace. Like plugs , wires , cap , rotor if bad , and service the ECM by unplugging and spraying with a WD40 like product. Because the ignition is pointless the timing should not change but check it. Read the posts here to learn more.

Because the ignition is pointless the timing should not change (8 deg) but check it. Read the posts here to learn more. The tester you need is an -1 not a -2.

i hate to tell you ,if you can not get code 12, or some others. (blank is not acceptible)

possible causes.
1: dead ECU ( stuck in BACKUP mode , this is where car can barely run and badly !!!)
2: Jumper placed wrong, next to bettery , 4pin cars and 6 pin cars see my link in my sig.
3: power to ECU is bad. ( that includes ground and 12 on all pins marked as such)

92 should be 4 pin plug with dangling rubber cap (yes).
next to battery. for sure.
the tang ( tang = lock latch at 12 pm) jumper 2 to 7 pm (b to C if you can see tiny print) Some call it Paperclip to 27 . regular size works best !

the jumper can be placed before or after starting. I like before , as is safer.
so your TIE (heheheh) doesnt get caught in fan to the right. ( a very serious mistake)
try both ways if you get blank , ok? be careful please.

In my opinion all these old cars 90-95 , must have the caps changed out.
I made list of parts from Mouser.com , last night on my web page, under , well here:

ecu-caps-source

$1.30 if you can handle a soldering iron, ask friends. for help. many kids can do it or old poops like me.

Getem out of there, they are crap.
alt:

if you live in N. Canada , some seem to be ok,
its that 15 years of cab heat up to 150F that kills them.

if they say RUBYCON in black wrap , they are junk. Blue ones last. < observation.

the ecu choices are vast:
fix self.
$70 fleebay or 100 or 200 depending on warrantee or ship first , core later rules.
$1400 from suzuki
or if 96 or newer $3650 from suzuki <<< see post last week , wow !

there are choices , besides what they say at xxxxxdealer.com.
BTW: some honest dealers offer rebuilts ( few).
the other fact is there are major rebuilding centers all over the country.
the can be found by searching using GOOGLE and for ANY CAR.

if you are in a panic, just buy the radioshack parts of the same uF and volts.
both can be higher , and it only has to clear the lid.
they are brute force filters, and do not TUNE something.

hope that helps. ( doing electronics repairs since 65' and like to help others )
cheers, jerry

PS:
i am working up a BOM build list at digikey so folks can just enter magic name or click a link and the parts order will be instantly made.
like MegaSquirt.com does.... its a free service, Mouser dont have that(yet). but they are fast and very cheap.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the repleys guys! Full tuneup/fluid changes is top of my list with any used vehicle and i'll do that before I start driveing it on a reguler bases. I have been reading here and you could'nt be more right, this site has great info!
jtgh,, Um you are the guru on these trucks. I did not get a code 12{or any code},it is 4 pin with cap. Are you saying that the the truck should be running when useing the jumper to read codes? I tried with key on not running. Going to order the ecu caps and pick up the tuneup stuff in the morning.
I'm not in panic mode so I want to do this the right. I just think this truck is going to make a great daily driver. Im in Ca. and can park it in these tiny little parking spaces, plus gas is 3.50-gal{my street legal k5 gets 6mpg}. And heek its fun to drive!
Ok so I've got a plan, I'll keep this thread updated, with more questiones I'm sure. Thanks again for all the help!!!!!!!

sorry (brain fart)
jumper in keyoff , then keyon no start.
Keyon , no start, jumper in ,
both should work.

only rule is engine must be 0 rpm.

I fogot to post this , sorry, CEL
flip that darn SES switch if at 50kor 80k or repeats , 100k, 150k, 180k, and so on. Sorry , for late post

just look at my photo it must like exactly like this or let us know.

http://carfix.stufftoread.com/ECU/diag-conn1aw.jpg

exactly ,

you must see code 12 roll out over and over never ending , let it run for 5min.
that is a good sign the ECU is ALIVE and not stuck in BACKUP .

if it is working really well and there is a real code set it will blink other numbers to
one after the other.

then repeats them all again forever.

BLANK is DOOM.

and very common . ( it can be $5 fix (1+4 ship) or $70 for digitalman on ebay.
there are many options.
Id pull the lid and look for imperfections , any .

these ECU are not junk they are robust.
but it does have a weak link and that is those crappy caps. 3 on mine.
Rubycons , seen many pop and some explode.

some ECU's may have the nicer blue coolered ones.mfg?
i have one spare that has Nichicon , never seen one of these Pop or leak.
I suspect Suzuki upgraded before 95 or exactly 95.

consider the newer 2007/8 ECU's that are cast in to resin (potted it's called)
dont even ask the price of one of them. WOW! Kiss off Vacation.

ITs all good news. these buggers can be fixed CHEAP !!!

keep a stiff upper lip,

cheers.

happens with three zeros only 50k and 80k forever ,unless you get smart and pull the switch out and unplug off from the back of the speedo.
then only CELs pop up. a blessing, it is.

Service Engine soon is what it is called.

click #1 >>>Blinking-Lamp

i cover all 4 light blinks, two are covered under #1 CEL.

cheers.

i tend to forget SES as mine is KILLED FOR EVER, sorry. that is to be checked first.
I have a photo with my hand moving the hidden switch (can never look at it)

but yes, all these cars (old) have SES light. look for xx000 on the odometer.
