there is a ground strap on the Tranny that must be grounded or
the solenoid can not pull in . big heavy wire 3/16" diameter at tail of tranny usually to body.
the connections to the tranny, solenoid jack at rear left, are bad.
TCM is bad (transmission puter)

ECU has 3 wires from ECU to tranny for solenoid ops.

there is a diagnostic port for this TCM but i dont have doc.'s for 96.sorry

engine ECU has 3 wires from ECU to tranny for solenoid op's.
C8,c15,16, greenred, greenyel,&greenonly, one of these lines is bad.
that is my best guess.
The ECU also monitor the shift selector too. it has an adjustment nut on the shift linkage.

tell more about what tranny does right and wrong.
