Check fuse first.
Then test the fuel meter with 12v test light (DO NOT just short it with vehicle power!)
Then when all else fails, grumble and curse as you crawl under the truck and get at the fuel gage unit. Disconnect its wire and measure resistance with an ohmmeter. It should be between 120 ohm for Empty to 3 ohm at full (notice that resistance drops at higher level). 1/2 tank should be around 32.5 ohm. If it doesn't seem right or doesn't change after adding fuel, then you've got a bad gage. I am pretty sure you'll have to drop the tank to get it out. If you are lucky it might just be gummed up, but since its such a PITA to get at, you might as well replace it.
If the gage seems fine, then you probably have a break in the wire from the gage to the meter somewhere. First check all of the connectors. Make sure they are tight and not corroded. Then use your trusty testlight on the yellow/red wire that goes to the gage. Grounded to the frame with the ignition "on" light should light up and the fuel meter should spaz out.
Hope this helps. Good luck,
- James
