Default 1991 Suzuki Escudo - Sluggish!

Just bought a 1991 Suzuki Escudo Nomade 16V automatic and it’s sluggish after all of the following has been done.

1. Changed oil and filter (Castrol GTX Protec 10w/30)
2. Replaced spark plugs
3. Replaceed air filter
4. Cleaned throttle body

From the registration, the engine has run 207,000 kms and previous owner doesn’t know when the cambelt was done. So I’m having the cambelt replaced together with a cambelt tensioner this week.

After the tune-up and oil change, the engine had a very slight improvement. Still, take-off is too slow and climbing a 45-degree incline runs really slow at 2500rpm. When done in reverse, still same thing happens.

I had the wheel settings to 2H and the overdrive off. I have placed a bottle of X-1R engine treatment additive and it gave a slight improvement. I will put in a X-1R fuel treatment additive in the hopes that the performance will improve.

Mechanic said that timing will be adjusted when cambelt is replaced. Likewise, mechanic advised that the rotor may need replacement as idle is not constant. Please help me solve this problem as I need to have this car running better. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Complete the tune up; rotor, cap & wires. Fuel filter would be good too. Probably ought to check the compression. How does it idle, ok? Good luck, Dave

thanks ranger88den for your post.

a friend rode with me and said that the clutch is sliding as i has difficulty going up a 45-degree incline. take-off is slow on a level road but picks up speed at 40kph. what else should be done, is this normal? please advise.

Wait and see what it does after the timing is set as in your first post. Also, when the belt is changed be sure to check the condition of the timing belt gear slot and key. Track86

a clutch or automatic that slips , is indicated by , rapid RPM rise with out a speed increase. (slipping, but automatics are designed to slip.....)[thus the name slush pump]

if the car bogs, that is condition of the engine, the lack of power and the lack of any
appropriate RPM increase under load, see? "aka: gutless, dog, slug,no power, etc"
but... forget all that....

prescription:
1-tune up. ( plugs,wires,cap, rotor and filters)
validate igntion timing, if off more than 2 degrees (panic) (you must place the freeze timing jumper to do this or this is a waste of time)

If timing fails, validate cam timing, "if off panic" then check the crank pully key way slot.
if ok, then replace Timing belt, and idler .

2-Regardless , set the crank pulley to the Service Bulletin value 94ft/lbs !!!
all kicks older than 1997 ( some 96's)

anyone getting an old 16v needs to always suspect a bad Timing belt.
if you dont you risk destroying the whole engine.
there is no better advice on first get car , checks.

if you need the procedures just ask, can pm it to you.
just send a pm request.
procedures,
Tbelt, lash, TSB's appropriate, Ignition timing 86-98.
they are 1 click away.
