Went out today and read the codes on the 95 Tracker pretty simple after going to jtgh's site .I got 4 codes 14-ECT engine coolant temp,22 TP Throttle position,23 IAT intake air temperature, and The very worst I believe 34 The air flow sensor or the MAF The thing runs great seems to have lots of power and starts right up no problem. I will investigate the ECT may be a bad wire as I notice that the temp gauge goes up and down or stays down so I'm thinking a bad wire or switch .I will try and adjust the throttle position see if I can get it into spec .And I will try and test the air intake temperature sensor along with all thew connections. But I'm really not liking the mas air flow sensor though.I will put the voltmeter on it and check all the connections.....and I didn't get the EGR like I expected? And like I said the thing runs great or seem to idles and starts great. The fuel mileage is a bit low though I think about 22 mpg .Anyone with any advice input tips or tricks will be greatly appreciated..Thanks!

Reason: addition
make sure your hubs are unlocked (can be verified by having someone look under vehicle and making sure the half shafts are not turning while driver pulls vehicle backwards slowly,
just a thought to maybe improve your fuel economy,
if forgot your year, Big dog. 16v
dont buy anything yet, ok. could be just one prob.

notice carefully all these (most) sensors operate using a special power source.
it is called +5vReF, it is a voltage suppled by the ECU.
Imagine, ECU uses 12dc from battery and then it has an internal spot regulator that
creates 5vdc to the CHIPS inside and also thur a wire to pin B15 on the ECU. (8valve only)
thiS B15 (color code SY, , S= Gray , by Y = yellow stripe)
This wire also feeds the Oxygen sensor, infamous for shorting it to ground or to oxy heater 12vdc power (very bad and common)
measure this 5vref, if not 5v +- .25 volts, 4.75-5.25 then it IS bad. 8V.
if 16v it is a ground reference, less than 0.25v.
pull oxy sensor conn at the fire wall engine bay.
if voltage jumps to 5v,
BINGO.
if 16v it will drop to 0v
same trick for each sensor. (pull and check B15 voltage)
I have an ECU here, on my bench, it had the 5vref , ecu traces blown to oblivion.
easy fix, i jumpered it. ( usually a oxy short causes it.)
if you need a print PM me. (road map)
Keep in mind these circuits are not as independant as the Ecu Thinks.
on 8v it is +5 refr, on 16v it is sensor ground reference.
so the voltage should be perfect 0v on Gray /yellow wires. ( your car )
if the oxygen sensor shorts its heater +12vdc to our main sensor ground, all sensors will read wrong. AND TPS and OXY, MAF , ECT , etc.
note 8v/16v work opposite ways,
this ground should be less than 1/4 volt , 0.25v , but I will try to look it up for you.
the ECU senses any error on this line and compensates, but It can not correct for
massive shorts to power source on this line.
94box That's 22 mpg with the hubs locked in .Weather here is too shitty to leave them out I'd be in and out every five minutes.I know I'd get better with them unlocked but how much??
jtgh Mines a 95 16V 5spd My first read through that was straight over my head .....ZOOM...!!!But after I read through it again ...hmm ...If I pull connector and measure the grey wire yellow stripe wire ( which is also know as B15)at the oxygen sensor or any of the sensors it should read 0 volts any more means what? That the sensor is bad??Bare with me it's still a bit over my head I think!...But I'm pretty sure you have probably hit the nail on the head ! I was talking to a friend of mine today and told him that I had 4 dif codes .He said that"s probably not your problem. He had his 96 scanned it showed 4 or 5 different things he ended up getting it scanned again with a different scan tool and that tool said O2 sensor he changed that and never had another problem! And he went right up to 30 mpg.
please, do stay in 4wd, i dont want you hurt or others!!
clearer.
your ECU provides a perfect (and measured) ground source to your sensors,.
this ground must never have something stored to it. (nothing)
it is common for the OXY sensor to short internally OR the OXY wires to short against
the red hot exhaust manifold ( too common)
you see 12 gets sorted to this REFERENCE GROUND B15 (ecu pin#)
and ALL SENSORS read WRONG.
It can be measured. this error.
this is just the top guess, in fact any of the sensors or wires could be shorted.
but OXY is #1 (over 900 degress F on my IR gun) hot as HE(double tooth picks).
the oyx ,as 4 wires.
Heater + battery 12v
Heater - dirty ground (chassis)
special B15 ground <<<<<< see this point can short to above.
Signal out 0 to 1volt ( dont try to measure this))
there is a number of ways to approach this issue.
1-swap in new sensor $100
2-pull OXY sensor and drive (reset codes first) see if codes clear on all other sensor.
3- measure gournd , if not zero volts, pull sensor plugs until it goes to 0v.
Guessing works some times, other times, it takes a volt meter and some tricks.
when i have mine locked, with the outside ambient temperature at around -15 degrees celsius, i average around 20-21 mpg, unlocked i average around 25mpg in the above cold weather; as comparison, in the summer unlocked city averages 27mpg city, and approx 33-37 mpg on the highway,
if you must keep them locked for safety, then of course keep them locked, you must have the two door, i test drove one and man did it fish tail, mine is a 4dr and its much better than a 2 door, IMO,
hope this helps,
2-door , I must drive real slow on ice. short wheel base. (94box)
I compensate with tires and or chains. ( and granny foot)
long WB is much better, and gives longer warning,
your MPG is normal , cuz of slow speeds and stop and go.
Are those canada gallons, (long for the queen) hah.? more than 4 liters?
I have a mpg live gauge on 2 cars, (soon on Kick with MS2)
both other get 40mpg at 40mpg on flat ground sea level. 1.8L
Display is running graphic plot. fun toy. ( built into ODB2 scan tool i have)
get 150mpg going down hills, and 15 going up.
traffic lights = 0 mpg ( neg. actully but puter cant divide by zero)
if you can post mpg as (normal or Imperial) then we can reverse calculate.
BIG dog , you can get at least 25 in a 4door.
your car is in limphome, or openloop, i suspect that latter.
3 modes here: ( not counting cold start ,cold warm up and hot idle)
limphome, 15mpg or worse , no power ,and black smoke out the back.
open loop, ecu is trying hard to enter closed loop but cant so mileage is 20-25mpg.
(usa gallons, about 4 liters) { it keeps trying over and over , never giving up }
close loop, MAF is working (if you have it) and OXY becomes the COMMAND device.
it becomes GAWD, in that , the ECU can set the A/F mixture to PERFECT.
on flat road get 27-30mpg.
no stops. no speeding, 40-60mph. (sweet spot) 5th gear.
Yes it's Canadian gallons 280km to 35 liters .How do you reset the codes?I briefly looked at it today but then started the timing belt .Most of the cover bolts are twisting off so I suspect it's due.
long gallons, ok. so 25 is very bad, for others used to 4 liter/quarts to a gallon.
4.55 liters to 1 Canada gallon, what a deal. ( haha)
just click my signature link or here.
I do not have a web page up for:
RWAL codes (rear wheel anitlock)
or
TCM codes 4sp auto transmision control modues.
yet.
working it,
Say OBD1 ( level 1) PUTERS do stink and are a PITA.
you have to do a Vulcan Mind meld on each and each is different as , Klingons are to Romulines.
LOL.
