Default Sidekick stalls

Have a '91 Sidekick with 1.6 8v engine. Starts fine but when warm (about 5 minutes) it just quits. Will restart immediately without gas pedal being depressed and run for about 2 mins at idle before quitting again. Can repeat process over and over. When she trys to quit and gas pedal is used, it will keep running but be very rough and want to quit. Gas is good. Thinking egr?, IAC (hope not), O2 sensor or choke problem. Anybody have some expert input? and, can the IAC be tested and/or cleaned?

Thanks for any help.

Default

tune up;
clean all the carbon out of EGR (remove, clean, put back
clean IAC (IAC keeps car at perfect RPM ,by applying perfect air to engine idling, unless EGR is flooding plenum with exhaust)

The IAC can only be clean or replaced. (testing could be done)

it has 2 parts that need testing.
1- the cold side ,has a wax pellat that expands and holds RPM at 1200 during cold start
if it holds 1200 and drops to 800 rpm then this part is working.
2- the second part , the air solenoid gets modulated by the ECU , this dynamic modulation keeps RPM perfect at all times. when hot.

to test it , you would need a 12v battery or power supply , apply it to the coil and see if
air flow thur the device increase and decrease when you tickle it with 12v on the coil.
easy to do really.
most ,just thow money .

I vote for Bad EGR, stuck open with carbon.
as IAC closes due to heat the predominate air becomes, exhaust and engine dies.

maybe?

fresh-air

your engine stops ( assuming its tuned up) because :
1: idle switch is bad in TPS
2: or you IAC is dead , stick gummed up
3: or the hidden cold idle bleed is stuck closed.

Click here to see it: (8v , but 16v has some of these parts)

click fresh-air

Thanks for hanging in there with me.

I'm determined to get this rascal up and running. The IAC was removed and it actuallly looked pretty clean. I cleaned it out with carb cleaner to be on the safe side and re-installed. On a whim, I checked the fuel pressure (no gauge, just the old fashioned flow test) and noted that it didn't have much oompf coming out of the fuel line. Pump sounded tired also. Pulled fuel pump and noted filter on bottom pretty clogged up. Am installing new fuel pump and filter and will see if that helps. Rationale was that if it wasn't getting enough fuel pressure, it would show up more when cold and that's kinda what she's doing.

I have been involved with auto and aircraft engines over the years, fixing and building them. Have been an aircraft maintenance pilot/officer for years. This one is a new one for me, but then again, the computer age really changes everything, especially in foreign cars.

Again thanks and I'll let y'all know how it goes.
