Default Real bad Smell of Petrol

Hi, When I start my Vit in the morning I get a real bad smell of petrol, this lasts for a while, then clears itself, but returns the next morning.

I did have a large back fire last week wich left a lot of soot on my driveway.I added some Redex to the fuel to help I hope.

I have looked under the bonnet when I start up to see if there was any petrol leeks, but cant find any.

Hope some one can help.

year, engine, 8v. 16 valve?

look and smell top of gas take.
look for gas spillage off top of tank .look for gas leaking on filler hose. etc.

you did not say, before or after starting car. ( when do you get the smell)
