Hi all. I'm new to this site as well as to Suzukis. I recently imported a 96 Escudo from Japan that apparently needs a clutch kit. The only ones available here (Botswana) are Vitara kits. If, as people on this forum say, the Escudo is just the Japanese or Asian name for the Vitara, can I be confident that a Vitara part will fit my Escudo, provided that the year, engine type, etc are the same?
you said kit , i presume you have a manual transmission.
if true.
the clutch varies by the Horsepower and displacement of the engine and the weight of the car.
2door has a light clutch , for example.
if you give us your VIN number we can look up what you have. just leave the last 4 digits nnnnnxxxx as x's to keep privacy.
is this a 1.6 Liter or 2 liter ?
2 engines in yours, 5 in vitara's.
Hi, jtgh. Thanks for your quick response. Yes, the car is a manual, but I'm not sure what you mean by VIN number (can you tell I'm not an expert?). There is nothing like that on the import documents.
However, the engine type is G16A (1590cc), engine number (with the last 4 digits X-ed out as you advise) G16A-38XXXX, and the chassis number is TA01W-88XXXX. Under the hood there is also a plate that gives the "type" as E-TA01W.
I hope that is enough info for you to figure out which Vitara kit will work. Thanks, I really appreciate your help!
some where on that car , usually under hood ,look up or down.
is a white sticker that shows.
E01 to E63 ( this will tell what fuel system type and smog equip is on the engine)
i looked this up and Botswana does not import this car, that is his mention that he Personally imported it ( wish I could do that! in USA)
so we must find out what car he bought and for what country it was targeted at. Export config?
Thanks, Dave and jtgh. There is definitely no number anywhere on the dashboard, or on the doors, in the glove box, etc. I have searched thoroughly.
There IS a white sticker (quite a large one, about 4 x 4 inches) under the hood on the driver's side (ie the right side), but it is mainly in Japanese! See attached pic. Could there be info here that would help, assuming some kind forum member can read Japanese?
And yes, there are no vehicle import restrictions here. Maybe Botswana is the true Home of Free Enterprise! However, there are drawbacks, which you would appreciate if you could see some of the safety and environmental hazards rolling down our roads (not to mention the state of the roads themselves!).
Anyway the car is a Japanese domestic market vehicle, never intended for export. Importing these is a popular option in Botswana (and many other African countries) because it is believed you get a higher-spec, better-maintained vehicle for your spend than when you buy South African-assembled vehicles. My clutch problem may give the lie to that idea!
E-TA01W this is the best data for ID on car.
I see them for sell in Japan called 3 doors.
is your car 3 doors or 5 doors? ( it think it's 3)
is engine DOHC 16V (2 cams)?
the id plate on the fire wall above engine (metal riveted to body)
it should have a MODEL ID on it. Photo of it, edit out last 3 digits of serial with photo editor.
MODEL ID: codes: on plate can look like:
like FAH673K01
or FAB673M30
list 2 digits are market code E01 and E30 respectively.
all digits tell what options are on car. engine , tranny, etc.
what does yours say.
Hi, jtgh. There is a metal ID plate under the hood, but it doesn't seem to show a model ID, just the chassis number. Here is a picture of it, and one of the whole engine so you can see where the plate is positioned.
any Suzuki dealer can give you parts.
and hopefully any regular parts house.
they will need 16v, the year and the number of doors.
the clutchs very by engine size(type), year and most important is the weight of the vehicle,
the 2 doors and 4 door ( 3 or 5 some call it) have different clutchs.
it shouldnt be a problem finding a clutch .
in this country we can go by the VIN. but not in other countries. they only have this TAG , that you have.
