Just got my 91 tracker running and am having a slight problem with it. It a 91 tracker8 valve 4x4 with the manual tranny. When starting i have to give it a little gas to get her started and it take a few tries when cold. Once ran for a min or slow you can let off the gas and she will idle. Runs but doesn't run perfect seems to stutter when starting off and only seems fair at high RPM's once it gets warm the it won't idle at all. also it may make a diff that i have header only no cat, NOTHING. Could it be a backpressure issue? Also timing is not perfect. Timing light buld went out on my buddies light so we got it as close as we can. It is very close there is def. something else wrong with it. Sorry for the long write up but i really need it running for the weekend.
the will cause the EGR Pressure differnential Modulator to go nuts.
It will kill the EGR valve function ( Yah , you removed that too?)
if your ECU detects this (as most do, in 91 and newer)
then the engine is forced into Limp Home mode, called fail safe by Suz.
this causes the following symptoms:"
Rich A/F
Retarded timing ( lack of power)
Very Poor gas mileage (20mpg or worse)
Fooling the ECU is hard. Fooling it to think everything is ok, when it is not is hard and expensive.
Read Mod'ers pages to learn how to do that. "millions of words"
or put it back to stock.
with out an O2 the ECU will never enter Closed loop.
again , retarded timing and rich fuel.
If it were mine(YMMY< IMHO) id put back the cat and all other missing components. ( in the first year you will save $600 in gas alone)
That's the penality for running rich. Adds up quick, pays for lots of nice new parts and cleaner air.
I was just on ebay looking for a used cat. could i not just buy and o2 Censor and an o2 censor bung and put it in a piece of pipe. This is going to be used for off roading and i am really trying to have this ready for the weekend. I got an old muffler for free, and i was going to cut out the front of it and put the two pipes straight into it and cut out the inside and take out most of the baffling. Will this work, and could i not mount the o2 censor right inside the nearly hollow muffler?
yeh, id like to strangle my P.O. , too.!
one thing is only your side this computer (ECU) is the dumbest of the lot. easier to fool ,
if yours is a CAL car it will throw CEL DTC code 51 forever.
weld on a bung, and hook up the O2.
then test it. (mileage , performance)
if it works great if not, maybe a restrictor in the
exhaust header to fool the EGR , modulator in to working.
That would be fun to try.
Id reduce the ID by 50 % on the first go.
take the header flange and make a plate with a hole that circular area by 50% using A= Pi x R squared.
is you cell lamp on now?
does it glow at keyone no start?
I will try to find out what the ave, restriction , for a CAT. IT must me at least 50% in my estimate.
Thanks alot. Where does the o2 censor plug into ? i don't see any wires hanging. I haven't gotten under it too look good, but i haven't noticed any odd wires hanging.
I forgot to ask , what is the state of tune on this car.?
cap ,rotor,wires,plugs , filters.?
did you try my ECU TEST: ( all 91's need this test unless you have new ECU) ECU
WIRES:
right above the brake MC booster unit on fire wall.
see large connector, that is the OXY sensor.
if you need a photo let me know.
4 pins and only 3 used , "off top of head"
mine is heated.
ebay OXY's are cheapest.
make sure you buy one with the pig tail conn.
one step at a time. (sows eary to silk purse)hehehe
yeah, i have checked it, the fuel injector transistor burned out. Got that fixed, and i also checked powers and grounds and i know cuircut board isn't cracked, and no noise. I have replaced cap, rotor button, plugs, and coil wire only. no air filter, cause im gonna extend it out of fender for snorkel. didn't think that that would matter. Is there two o2 censors ? i have one in my manifold. no clue if its working right. Also check engine light is on but i cant get the codes. Any tips for that?
Thanks
thanks, Was a little confused i do have a 02 censor then. And i tried to pull the error codes and they wont blink out. I read all the instructions and tried it but they just won't blink out. I don't know what im doing wrong
