89 vitara 2dr autotrans oil level

hi just a bit comfused here how do you check the oil level on the autotrans engine running or engine switched off?any one knows?

ok according to the 89 owners manual it says to use Dextron2 and to check with enging running on a slow idle and the fluid at room temp. run through each gear then back to park, then check
