I feel really stupid not being able to figure this out....But, we can't figure out how to lower the back seat to make it flat for hauling stuff.
It looks like the back seat that you sit on should flip up and rest against the back of the front seats then the very back backrest should drop forward and down to make a flat area to haul stuff on. I can't find a release though to make the back seat part flip up.

I appreciate any help.

1-Pull up on the buttons on either sides of the TOP of the backrests and fold them down. The pull up buttons are close to the shoulder belts.
2-Using the handle under the rear of the seat (towards the center), pull up the seats and use the integrated props to hold them up.
I did give it another try but could not locate a handle of any type. I wonder if the '97s just don't have that capability?? Or if the handle is missing....there is a hole at the bottom of the back of the back seat but no handle visable. I may try sticking a screw driver in there another time to see if I can unlatch it that way.
Hey some seats are just plain wierd ( remember Asians were famous for finger puzzle boxs , now they make cars, hehehe)
mine has the same problem
the cable for the handle broke.
handle missing. (common)
I removed my seat for ever, but if I wanted it back
Id buy the part from SUZUKI.
if you need the PN , can give it.
holy moly

the handle fell off the back seat in both my trackers. It doesn't seem to be attached all that well... a screw driver won't help, you need to hook onto the latch and pull straight back. Squeeze a coat hanger flat enough to fit, but not so flat that there isn't still a loop. Reach in from the right side and sweep left. it's only 2-3 inches in so it shouldn't be too hard to catch. Then pull, hard.
