Default 98 JX Auto Trans problem

Have a 98 Sidekick JX 2dr, 4WD with auto trans (mech calls it a 180?) Started getting genereic data code of P0740 indicating some problem with torque convertor final gear mechanical lock at about 53 mph. Car only has about 50,000 miles with about 12,000 being towed miles. Knowledgeable friend suggested a full flush as a precautionary measure. Cleared problem code for a couple of day but it came back. Secondary indication was that after sitting for extended period, after starting, trans would not be responsive for a few minutes, then fine. Mechanic suggested Torque Convertor may be leaking down when sitting suggesting leaky seal on center shaft. I did check suggested by him and found dipstick level 4" higher than normal after sitting which seems to support his theory.

Has anyone run into this problem and could a leaky center seal be responsible for my problem with high speed lock down of Torque Convertor as suggested by chronic P0740 code?

Any inputs appreciated.
Joe

My 96 has the leakdown problem, but I just put it in NEUTRAL after starting it while I buckle up and maybe for a little bit longer, then it's OK till it sits a couple of days without use. I've had other cars with the same problem, never fixed one, never caused anything else. It wouldn't affect the TC lockup. Mine is a 3 spd auto trans and I had to replace the TCC solenoid some time ago, been good every since, locks up at 42 MPH. Tracka
