Default New owner and lots of questions

Hey guys. I just picked up a 93 4X4 JX with a 5 speed from a buddy of mine. As per usual he swore that the car was in good shape. So after driving it around all day today I have found some problems that I need answers to.

The first one, and the most annoying, is when excelerating there is a constant whine coming from the rear of the vehicle which goes up in pitch as i go faster. I cant tell if its somewhat normal because it has a gear driven T-Case or because the pinion bearing is failing.

Second, it takes a lot of effort to put the vehicle into first gear.

Any help would be great.

The whine is probably from your differential (or tyres) and is probably harmless. My '91 has the same whine (but not my 98).

As for first gear having trouble getting in, that's going to be in your gearbox.

BTW congrats, most people fall in love with these trucks and somewhat of an underground cult is slowly forming.

Does the whine stop when you let off the gas?

What are the maintanance issues for the gearbox?

I am already hooked! I was a Land Crusier guy but now I think that I am a Zuk convert.

The whine almost sounds like an old school bus. It will wopwopwop with bumps as you hit them.

The noise changes when you let go of the accellerator.

I'm not aware of any major issues with the gearboxes, anyone?
