Unhappy Timming problems!!!!

Ok, so my timming is way off... the notch is way to the left on the main shaft when I hit it with the timming light.

It's adjusted to the max on the rotor. So i took out the distributor and moved it over a tooth thinking maybe someone before me monkeyed with it...

That didn`t help because the notch was then to the right, adjusted to the max again in the opposite direction...

How could i get my timming right when neither teeth allow the adjustment to center the notch on the pulley...

Also, where is the thing you're suposed to short out when you check the timming, it shows one plug with 4 wires and you're suposed to short out two of them... It's to get rid of the electronic advance...

Please help,
-D-

No doubt you have the "worn crankshaft slot & timing gear pulley" problem, bad-bad. Got to the top of this page and search "timing", lots for you to read ther, and some pictures of the worn parts. Tracka

D,
I’m not sure on your vehicle, you failed to state the year, but on a 98 Tracker its on the passenger side, to the radiator side, of the headlight bucket. Has a rubber cover over it.

Thanks guys,
First, I've never checked the pulleys, but I'll take a peak this weekend.
And it's a 91, I think that there's a white rubber-capped plug in there. I'll try that one.

thanks Tracka, that link helped, i'll check out all the parts this weekend

I've got a parts truck in the yard, so I'll rip it apart first incase I break anything.... lol and to check the condition of it's parts (It's much easier, and much more fun, to rip apart the parts truck with a saws-all and torches... helps get the stress out; and the rad/grill out of the way :P)
