Default need more power

Hi,
New to this forum but have been on many others. I find they have more information than any book can tell you.
I got a 1990 Tracker a few months ago. Its strictly for off-road use. I already have a 3 inch suspension and 2 inch body lift on it and run 32" tires. Now the problem is the lack of power. Does anyone have any cheap conversions to a v6 or anyways to enhance the 4 popper that's in it. The key word here is cheap.
Thanks for any help.

Is this a 16V or an 8V motor? Carbed or FI? More info means more replies.

It is an 8V FI engine. I did add a resistor to the AIT sensor to fool the computer into thinking it was getting cold air all the time. That did seem to help a little. Also removed the convertor and put on dual exhaust to let it breath better. Thats all I've done so far.
Thanks for asking.

Maybe a higher flow air filter might help as well.

You guys are offering great solutions to enhance HP, however, for offroading, what I think he would need is more torque. I'm not sure how to enhance the torque on a small i4 but I think that a small block V6 would be a good idea, I know that there are conversion kits to install a V6 but I dunno about pricing.

Why do you feel you need more power? You'll never get incredible accelleration with these trucks, they're natural climbers, crawlers and mudders but they're not much on accelleration...0-60/15 minutes...

the only things i can really think of to boost the power on these little motors is to add a doug thornly header, open air fliter, the usual perfomace things, you wont get any stellar perfomance out of these things. the best thing to do with with the bigger tires is to regear. that will give you the best results, quickest and easyest. if all esle fails, a 4.3L would fit nicely under the hood

I plan on making 300HP next year and 200HP this summer. I'd like to get at least into the low 15s in the 1/4 mile this year. Here's a good start Exhaust Combo Camshaft Air Intake System . But there is no way to make cheap power.

Thanks for all the input! Torque is the word I should have used. It needs more low end and gears are just to expensive. I'd love to put in a V6 but can't find any adapters for the stock tranny. I can find a motor no problem. I'm actually building this for my wife because she likes the size. I run a Jeep Cherokee which does just fine with a lift and 33s. We're not hard core wheelers, just for fun but that Tracker just needs a little more.
Thanks again! Anymore info you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Well being some one who knows the worrys of loss of power do to a lift. I suggest doing gears. I own a 91 exploder with a 4inch lift and 33's. The truck came with 3.73's and now I run 4.56's. I noticed increased gas mileage and power. So that is my suggestions on your lack of power.
