The primary function of the Engine Control Module is to determine how much fuel the motor needs and appropriately control the injectors. In it's simplest form. The ECM inputs readings from sensors (MAF,IAT,MAP,O2,ECT,TPS) to determine how long to hold open the injectors or pulse width. The ECM controls the injectors not by energizing them but rather grounding them, so when the car is turned on the injectors postive wire is always powered. The ECM also controls Exhaust Gas Recirculation circulation by opening and closing vacuum valves. It also controls the Idle Air Control valve allowing air to bypass the throttle body and thus controlling idle speed.
