Default Glowing exhaust manifold

hey guys,
i need a little help here, i have been driving my 90 kicker to and from work for the past few weeks or so and one time when i realised that my intake manifold had cracked i noticed the exhaust manifold glowing red hot i changed the intake manifold and the truck runs fine and no fluid leaks.
i gutted out the cat converter and put a pipe through the gap and then i open the bonnet last night and noticed that the exhaust was glowing red after 15 mins of driving from work.
what could it be??
i need help
thanks
Allan.

It's a heat related issue.

No seriously...

There may be several reasons for it but it might also be normal. Keep in mind most of us (myself included) still have the exhaust manifold heatshield in place so it might be glowing under there.

Anyone?

The manifold probably shouldn't be glowing red. Your probably running rich, might be the O2 sensor or a stuck injector, but a stuck injetor will usually make it run like sh*t.

Hey,
the heat shield is still on there and you can see through it on the side.
it may be running rich though coz i timed it with marks without a gun, it runs smooth with slight back fire when rolling down a hill on neutral. i got the crank pully notch at 12 o'clock and the top pulley at 12 o'clock too on the mark the dist was on cyl 1.
is there any other abstract way of timing without a timing gun to get it right on???
Allan.

I don't think you can advance the motor so much to make the manifold turn red without it running like total crap. That being said, I would look towards your muffler. I bet half the innards from your cat clogged up your muffler. Back pressure is what will cause an exhaust manifold to glow like you are describing.

when you're exhaust is glowing RED the fuel mixture is running lean. When you have a rich fuel mixture you should see smoke if you get on the gas real hard and a rich mixture runs cool. I had this problem with my tracker once. I think the problem was either an air temp sensor or O2 sensor, I replaced both at the same time, so i don't know exactly which one fixed it. I also had to replace the exhaust manifold because I hit some rain puddles that splashed water on the manifold while it was glowing red and fractured it near the O2 sensor.
