Question first time question--4X4 mode works?

I have a 91 sidekick, used to have an '89.

My question is how can a person easily tell if the 4X4 works!?

My old F150 was stuck yesterday so I was going to pull it out with my 8Valve sidekick (gotta love it!). The result was that it acted just like a 2 wheel drive, the back tire spun and the front tires seemed like they would not even move when "floored".

The 4-wheel low and high lights were on. I also switched the hubs to "lock" position.

My old junky '89 would pull lots of stuff and it had about 200,000 miles. This '91 has under 70,000 miles and doesnt seem to pull anything.

Guess I could put front end on a block, lock down the back end and see if the wheels spin, but will doing that tell me if they are actually getting any significant torque???

Power is split 50/50 so if the back tires are spinning the front ones should be too. After locking the hubs try rolling backwards to engage them.

You do realize, you'll only spin one rear wheel and one front wheel in a pulling situation like that, maybe the front one on the other side was spinning? Without lockers or some such, 4wd is really only 2wd. Tracka

Limited slip differentials often put more stress on the drive line. But don't forget when in 4x4 there are only 2 wheels spinning but when in 2WD there is only one so there's still potentially twice as much traction, plus the front tire usually has more traction than the rear because there is a little more weight up front.

Default 4x4

thanks schoner,

it was very slick ground, i will remember the backing up info.

i have enjoyed my sidekicks.

never had the 16 valve though, always the 8.

my plans are to eventualy put a brush guard and winch on the front and a tow bar on the back, new paint scheme (mostly white now), new louder muffler system, and slightly bigger tires (standard size now).

Thats all, no big lift kits etc.
