Default Fuel Pump

Hi

I am a new member to this forum. My Vitara which is a 1.6L 16valve jlx 1992 is now off road due to fuel pump failure. I would appreciate any help with the following questions. As the pump is inside the petrol tank, can the pump be reached through any inspection hole under the rear seats or would the tank have to come down? Also since the price of the pump is so expensive, can I just install an external electrical pump of the same pressure rating, outside the tank instead of inside the tank? Does any one know of cheap source for these fuel pumps? Finally can the original pump be repaired in any way? Thanking you in advance and looking out for your replies. Danny

you will have to drop the tank. if you can find a pump that has the same output i can't see why not. and yes there are some places that do repair fuel pumps. i can't say where or who but they do exist. all in all i think you should try to put in the same pump. in the long run it will probably give less problems

I will know defenitely once I have taken out the fuel pump after dropping the tank and disconnecting it and testing it later today. It could be blocked up pipes from the pump to the engine. What I am certain is that petrol is not getting to the engine. Thanks for your reply

do you think it could be the computer thats causing the problem. my computer failed in december and it seemed like it was the fuel pump. here is a link from this forum on how to check the computer and fix it if its the problem. im not sure if its the same procedure for the 16v as it was for the 8v motor.

Default Fuel Pump

4njeep. I get the feeling that you just might have hit the hammer right on the nail. I have spent the last two days trying to get to the pump. As the tank was full of petrol and also the bolts underneath well rusted, an old friend suggested cutting in to the floor which I did and finally got to the pump. Disconnected the pipes to the pump and reconnected them as petrol was pouring out of the pipes. Turned the engines and it fired immediately and continued idling for nearly five minutes before ctting off. I am begining to think that the problem may not be due to the pump or possibly due to a lazy pump that stops when it gets a bit hot. Having read the thread you have pointed me to , the problem could be due to the faulty ecm or possibly dirty injectors. So tomorrow I will be starting eliminating other possiblities one at a time. Thank you for your directions and I have copied the thread . Danny

I'm not totally convinced that it's the fuel pump I would grab a bucket and disconnect the fuel pressure reg. and see how long the fuel runs when the pump is always on. Just to be shure because its unusual for a pump to quit working after 5 min.

Thanks Schoner. I am going to connect the outlet to return pipe of tank and time the pump running time or use the bucket which is more visible. I would appreciate advice and any threads and directions for cleaning the injectors as some one in Suzuki has suggested it moght be due to faulty injectos which shut down when engine gets hot. It is unlikely that all four injectors would become faulty at the same time. Is there any way that I could test the injectors myself? Thanks every one. Danny

I would agree, it's very unlikely that the injectors would all fail together repeatably. If you test the pump and it flows fine I would look at the IAC valve and if theres nothing wrong with the IAC valve and theres no vacuum leaks, then I would look at the PCM.
