If it is an automatic. You probably have auto locking hubs. If you have a manual tranny. You could have manual locking hubs. They are basically little tabs in the center of your front tires. You would have to physically turn these to the lock position in order for your fwd to work.
hope this heps.

Ifd you're going to use the 4WD, do some homework on the do's and don'ts to avoid parts damage. Tracka

Default Re locking hubs

Ok a little more info was obviousley required.

We have a 1995 Vitara 16v 1.6jlx se manual 5 speed, with a 2nd gear shift to engage 4wd both hi and lo ratio, but what are locking hubs?

As I said previousley we havn't had the Vitara very long and have only engaged 4wd to check it works which it appears to, we havn't actually used it in anger yet, I understand that it is a direct mechanical drive so to reduce the amount of "Lock up" it would have to be disengaged when turning eg "u"turns etc.

So do I have locking hubs? theres no evidence in any info I have on the car, so your help will be greatly apptreciated.

Thanks Tony

Did you read my post? Yes you have locking hubs. Are they autolocking or manual locking? I don't no. Look at the front hubs. Is there a tab to turn? If not they are auto locking hubs.

o.k., if you look at the center of the front wheels you will or won't see a finger dial to turn the hubs"manually". if it is there than you have "manual" hubs that require you to select lock or free "manually". if you see a plain covered"pretty" little hub that has no dial ,that is an auto hub. in this case you will remain in your truck and it will automatically lock when you throw it into 4wd. to unlock you gotta put lever back in 2wd. and next time you stop reverse about 8 feet and presto you are in free position and "manually" didn't do much at all. ya lucky %$#$#!!!

Default re re locking hubs

Thanks Suzboy

Theres no sign of anything to turn on the hub, so I guess they are auto lock hubs? This will sound stupid I know but why do we need locking hubs? new to this 4wd stuff as you can no doubt tell.
Thanks Tony

I think the manual locks are better for back roading and hill climbing. It's a stronger design. Auto locks are fine for snow and mud And you don't have to fight with frozen hub locks that won't turn because of ice or what ever. They are great little FWDs enjoy.
