Default Transmission options

Hi, so this is my second post. My family has a 1997 suzuki sidekick, JLX sport. It's 4 door, 4 wheel drive, has the 1.8L 16V engine (I think it's the 1.8, the bigger of the two, could be 1.6...), and a now defunct 5 speed manual transmission. That leads me to the topic at hand.

This is our second transmission. The first one lasted for 250k miles, ran perfectly, was moderately abused in clay mines, treated nicely on the freeway for 100's of miles at a time, etc. It started making horrible noises, then stopped going into gears. We got a replacement one from a nation wide rebuilding chain, changed it out with a new clutch, bearings, and all that and it was running just fine. After the warrentee ran out, the transmission started making the same noises, then it dropped whatever gear that works 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th gear into the oil pan, or somewhere of that vicinity.

So the questions are, what are the best options. I'd rather not get a $1200 rebuilt transmission, put it in, and get 15k miles out of it again. It's fairly hard to find an exact copy of my car anywhere, let alone one that I can pillage for parts, will other transmissions/transfer cases work? If not, is a rebuild something I can do? I've rebuilt a domest automatic transmission (transaxle actually). I don't even know where one would even begin go to get the parts for a 'zuki manual though. Is an automatic swap easier or cheaper? How long do these things normally last? Are my family members shifting improperly to kill these transmissions (necessitating an auto swap!)? Finally, for good measure, who framed Roger Rabit : D

Off to scour the classifieds! Thanks in advance
-Tom Kelly

P.S. I live in Gresham Oregon, if any of you are nearby, wanted to give advice, hawk your parts at me, or whatever, my email is tkelly278@yahoo.com

Thats really weird sounds like you just had some bad luck. I have a 93 auto 4 speed with 320000 KM on it that I have beat the shit out of and still works and my 94 manual has 210000 KM on it and while I think the sycros are wore out it still functions well. Keep in mind you'll probably have to swap drive shafts along with the auto.

Thanks for your reply. So I can be OK with going to another manual? What years swap between these cars? It's easy to find a messed up '89-early 90's with a good trans, but hard to find a '97.

Nobody? I called calmini and everyone else, they all pretty much say they don't do a darn thing for the sport model. Could not get off the phone with me fast enough. I'd even consider a 1.6 swap if I could sell the 1.8 for a decent price and it would be a plug and play kinda deal. Does anyone even have a link to help me find what i need to know? Transmission model numbers? Anything? I found the auto model number, but if I could keep it a manual that would be nice.

OH! I may have struck gold. I'd like someone to confirm

I have a used manual tranny here from an early 90's Sidekick. Worked fine when pulled. Where are you located?

I live in gresham, oregon, it's a little east of portland. That still doesn't answer the question of weather or not it will fit .

Too far to ship even if it does fit. Try Hawk Strictly Suzuki (google him) he's out your way and should know what trannys fit and likely has the one you need.
