Default bleeding cooling system

Hi Guys, i'm new to this site.I bought a 97 sport a couple of weeks ago with a bad motor.I put a used engine in.It runs good but i can not get the cooling system to bleed and the stat to open. Its a 1.8 with the lower thermostat.I tried filling the block through the top hose, but didn't help,The temp goes to hot before the stat opens.I also tried a different stat. The lower hose stays cool. Thanks in advance

John

I don't know much about the 1.8L, is the thermostat in the right way (not upside down).

Make sure that your heater is on and adjusted for max heat. This often provides the needed coolant "flow" to burp the system of air. That along with repeated engine warm up and cool down cycles should get things in proper operation.

Is there a bleed screw on the top of the water pump or mounted high in the coolant loop like near the cyl head? Some radiators have this feature too. Air can be manually expelled through these.

Try taking the thermostat out and see what happens.

Thanks Kerry and Max. I'm sure i have the stat in right, the sensor is toward the block.I don't see a bleed screw anywhere.I think Kerrys idea of doing cycles of cool down may help.I'll try jacking the front up this morning also.
