Unhappy Gearbox

Hi, I'm thinking I may be soon in need of a new gearbox.

It is a PIG to try and get it in 1st and 2nd sometimes even when going along, so half the time I'm coasting for a few meters before I can get it in, it just goes "clunk" like somethings not opening almost for me to get it in gear.

I have the clutch down to the floor at the same time.

3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse are more or less ok to get into, 5th has a more grindy noise but runs fine.

Does anyone know how much ish a new one is or how much to recon mine?

Its a 16v 1996 P reg.

Thanks.

Hmmm, just had a thought, your car may have a clutch hydraulic master cylinder and a slave cylinder. If that's the case, check the fluid level in the clutch master cyl, you could have a leak in either of the two. Tracka

if it isn't the clutch which i don't think because it would be basically the same for all gear selection and 5th would not be noisy. it is more than likely the syncromesh is toast or input shaft bearing is shot. likely the two combined. i went through the same problem a few years ago. too expensive to fix, bought a scrap yard tranny for 250.00 bucks

I agree with suzuguy. The clutch is a cable system not hydrulic.

I bought a rebuild kit for my 96 tracker for @ 150 bucks. If you want to rebuild it yourself.

These guys probably know more about it than I do, but I believe in looking for simple things first, clutch cable adjustment -AND-lube in the transmission. Can't hurt and could possibly pay off. Tracka
