does anyone find a big difference getting rid of oem air box and installing cone type air fiilters? if so tell me what u seen happen, good or bad????? i was wondering if this is a waste of time. did it cause anything like spark knock because of a leaner air/fuel ratio, too loud........etc. thanks guys

Mines working fine. Plus you can really hear it sucking air at about 1/3 throttle. Sounds pretty cool.

Mine works Great,I have cold air induction to the K&N Filter , changes the engine noise but sounds cool.

First of all getting rid of the stock air box does not change the air to fuel ratio. The air to fuel ratio is controlled based on input from the Mass AirFlow sensor and the O2 sensor, and on some models a Manifold Air Pressure sensor, and Inatake Air Tempreture. Replacing the stock intake with a higher flow unit like a cone type will reduce restriction in the intake system making it more efficient but will result in only minimal power and fuel efficiency gains on an otherwise stock engine. This is because the engine isn't trying to suck more air. If a larger throttal body or better breathing cam was installed then the higher efficiency intake will have a more significant impact. This is also true for higher flow exhaust systems. Also changing resistance in the way gases move thru the motor will change the torque and power curves. Often resulting in a slight peek power gain at the cost of a narrower power band. Thats why many cars have a dual runner intake to take advantage of the best of both worlds. But back to air/fuel. If your sucking more air into the engine the EMS will keep the air to fuel ratio consistant by adding more fuel. Another consern when using cone type air filters is heat. The stock air box sucks air thru the inner left fender where it is colder and denser. The high flow charcteristcs of the cone type air filter can sometimes be conterbalanced by the lower air density due to the hotter air. I have experimented in this area and currently run a high flow intake will a custom heat shield, advanced ignition timming and higher flow exhaust as well as slightly higher fuel pressure. Sound is notiseably louder and deeper sounding especially when combined with higher flow exhuast. The performance gains are minimal as monitored with my accelerometer, but the freer revving motor makes for more enjoyable sustained high speed operation as well as quicker shifts, the weight savings in the exhuast are always welcome and the sound is always good. I plan to next trick the computer and get a richer air to fuel ratio to take better advantage of these modifications.

Exactly! Very nice.

Also if you are looking for forced induction, the computer won't recognize it, the data charts only read so much airflow in and after that it can't keep up with the fuel. So if you want to force induction your car make sure to get a tuning on the computer, and usually a good idea to get higher flowing injectors to go with it as well as a fuel pump that can keep up (stock suzuki pumps are very weak). And make sure to re-inforce the engine where it needs, I know people who have turbod a sidekick and it bends rods rather easily, not made for that kind of power.

If I had means to learn how to weld, I'd be all over fitting a supercharger or light turbo. For where the intake and exhaust are so easily accesible and close in a sidekick it should be pretty easy. But not gonna happen, only a dream haha.

I did hear somewhere that you can bolt a swift GTI head with turbo and manifolds straight to it if you include the wiring and computer and re-tune them for the heavier load and larger displacement. Myth? I dunno, sounds cool tho.

My goal is a turbo. Custom equal length ceramic coated exhaust manifold, a turbo from something probably a Mitsu, Front mount intercooler with fans and a spray bar, Intake off a GTI Turbo, and a standalone EMS I'd like to use a MoTec or F.A.S.T., and a distributerless igniton, custom rods, 8.5:1 compression ratio pistons, new higher spec bearings all around, new bigger injectors, in line fuel pump, new radiator with electic fan, high flow electric water pump, oil cooler and maybe a electric oil pump, polish everything, new cams from Calmini, and limited slip diffs front and rear, and maybe throw a little nitrous on the fire. I'd like to make at least 250HP. Should make for a good sleeper. Now I just need to find the money. I'm also training for Automotive Tech. Check out these websites www.turbinetech.ca www.foo.is/gallery www.calmini.com

Sounds like a winner keep me updated, I wish I had the cash to do all that. Mitsu prolly good idea for the turbo. Designed for same type of engines (hell half the engine is mitsu parts anyway)
