Bill,

I'm planning to install the rear lockright myself. I think since the pinion gear is untouched, there is no need for remeasuring the preload and all that R/P balancing stuff, am I right?

Marking everything before dissassembly and then reassembling it so that the marks are exact sounds like it would work, right? Unfortunately you still have wear that has happened since the diff was first (last) assembled. If that is an original factory diff (no upgrades) then it's got a good 20 years of wear. I would still check the settings as you assemble it.

Well I don't have the expertise to do that, so probably I'll just reassemble it then take the whole R/P assembly to a mechanic to balance things out for me. How about that?

BTW, why are you still up?
