Default Gear stick problem, help!!

I recently removed my gear stick to get the knob off and replace it, however now i cannot get the gear stick to sit back in the case properly. I took the gear stick out whilst the car was in neutral, however when i tried to start it it was in gear. I can get the gear stick in but it wont move besides moving to the right a bit but bouncing back. Is there anything i can do to get it in??

ok here's the deal
I had to change the seals of the gearing stick a year ago because my stick was turning around to the point I could take ir apart without tools! when I got to the mec he puled it out with no problem in the meanwhile he was shifting gear with a flat screw driver! I think you should move the piece were the sitck sits to the neutral position until I saw at the mec it's easy try it and keep posting
