I had the same problem on my 1985 Sierra. I thought I'd have to cut the gear knob off but I ended up removing the gear stick and putting it in a vice and used a pair of stilsons on the knob to remove it. Now that the gear knob has been off I can remove it by hand without removing the gear stick from the gear box.

the manufacture uses some sort of lock tite. i know in the past i have had to heat bolts on the sami to get things loose. i do not know if this is plausible with the gear shift.

good luck

my .02 cents

it's because of the bearings check them and try putting the gear in neutral move it with a flat screwdriver it's easy check the bearings if you don't the stick will move strangely XD
