Front Wheel Lugs

I have an '88 Samurai and there is a broken wheel stud on the front axle. I have not looked into the repair of it as yet. I see that the brake caliper and rotor must be removed to get at it. My question is...Has anyone replaced this lug bolt and is there room behind the axle plate to remove and replace the stud without removing the entire axle? The existing stud seems to have the serrations striped and would turn without letting the nut loosen, so I broke it off to get the wheel off.

G'day Juju,

To replace the stripped wheel stud requires removal of the following:

Free wheel hub
Disc rotor
the hub which the wheel studs are attached to

While you have the hub off the axle it's a good time to check the wheel bearings and if they are OK clean and repack them with new grease. If they are on their way out it would be a good idea to do the other side as well. I've just reconditioned my front axle on my 1985 SJ410 Suzi and it took me about 2-3 hours for each side. Now I won't have to do them again for another 10 years. Hope this helps you out.
