I have an 05 sport and feel the speakers are crap.
Am happy with the stereo but turned up to even moderate volumes I can often hear the speakers 'pop' as the sound breaks up.

I'm replacing the front speakers today and thats easy.
But can't get to the rears. Does anyone know anything about the rear speakers (size, spec. etc.) and how to remove the side panels to get to them.
The panels wrap round the door apeture and look like there are hidden clips behind the panel. I have already lifted the top edge of the panel a little to have a look and have snapped one of the clips.
Can anyone help/advise ?

Thanks

Jeff

i think the back speakers are 5.25 inches. although if you go on http://www.sisoc.co.uk and have a look under members cars then you will see how some people have mounted some bigger speakers in the arm rest space. you need to take the panel off to get to them.

I think they fall under the 12cm bracket in shops. The front at the rear are the same size. I think the rear ones have better sound handling though. The front ones are Clarion though and VERY poor quality unfortunatly. The side panels pop off i think. not sure though.

Ah, yes. I see what they've done. Too much hassle for me that is. The fronts are now a Sony XS-A1027 10cm direct exact fit swap from halfords for £39.95 and are miles better. I might fix it now by turning the fader to the front and ignoring the fact there is rears in the car.
But thats maybe cheating..........

thats what ive done. ive got some alpine ones off ebay for around £26 delivered so that was quite good. ive got the fader turned to +2 towards the front and its just enough to stop the crapy sounding thud from the back ones.

Pragmatic solutions. Thats what I like.
Or at least I did think that. I thought!
Now i'm 44, getting on a bit and would want anything for a quiet life.

However i;ve decided to make some custom pods. to be unobstusive. I fancided filling in the armrests in the back but though they might look a little crappy.
So, ive made some cardboard 'moulds' to fit in the gap below the rear seat at the outside edges. There a funny shape but will take a 6x4 speaker and the volume of the pods are approx 2 to 2.5 litres.

I'm gonna mould over them with fiberglass and them mould a plywood fascia into it. Them paint it up or trim it somehow.

I've removed the radio and its easy to splice into the wiring and disable the current rears without damaging the harness for when I sell it.
These pods will then just slide into the gap.

I post a picture or two when I get finished and give you an update on the sound.

Thanks folks

Jeff

they're 10cm jobbies like the front ones, but only have one voice coil and a crappy cardboard cone for high freq.

the interior is easy to remove just start at the tail gate and work forward. push the middle of each round clip down about 3mm till it clicks, and don't loose them!

i've chopped the leads to all of the original speakers fitted infinity components up front, used a channel for each of the four speaks on a 560watt amp, tweets in the factory dash pods and made pods for the mids under the dash pointed down. not ideal but i park on the street so need stealth!
in the back i've got 2 kenwood 6x9subs on a 200w amp mounted in an mdf floor in the boot.

It looks standard and doesnt interfere with my boot space.

I spun it, hit a wall and then rolled it, a month after its birthday. You cant see from that pic but the boot lid isnt marked.

But i've got another, there wasn't an option really.

hi

I don't think it's the speaker, one of the first thing I did to my iggy was to replace the Clarion head unit with A JVC miles better.
as for the speakers the Clarion's can take the stereo up to about 70 - 80% volume.
recently tried some sony X-plod 140watt max power, 30watts RMS power. but could only take the stero to about 50% before the bass started to distort every thing.
trust me change the head unit first
happy iggy sport owner.
