Default Forenza turbo question.

Hello thinking about putting a turbocharger in my forenza. Although I've looked online for kits and haven't found one compatible with the car. So my question to you is where exactly can I find such a kit? How much boost could I expect from a kit.

I can only provide a general contribution... If you are unable to find a kit for your vehicle you may have to go to a custom application. There are 2 routs you could take...

One is to find a custom solution. This usually involves contacting a company that makes turbos. They can provide specifications and recommendations based on your vehicle and your expectations. The nice part is there isn't much you have to do other than open your wallet....really wide.

Two is to try to size a turbo from an existing vehicle. These turbos are usually found on auctions sites or classifieds from people upgrading their OEM turbo. This is usually a popular way to go because it is much cheaper. However since it is more DIY there is a huge amount of research and some trial and error. There is also a risk of damaging or destroying your engine if you don't know what you are doing.

You will need to think about what your realistic expectations are. If you want a mild boost in power (a few PSI) there are OEM vehicles can handle it with relatively minor modifications. However if you are wanting a lot of boost you will be looking at having to upgrade many components in order to support the added power.

Of course there's no off-the-shelf turbo kit for our bastard cars. However, putting together a basic DIY kit isn't rocket science. You just need to do your homework. When you think you know all you need, research some more!

Our engines, being 2.0L inline-fours, are fairly similar to the vast majority of engines on the planet. So look at how Honda, Toyota, Ford, GM, etc. owners have crafted their turbo set-ups. There's a wealth of knowledge to be had out there. It can get confusing, but you'll be OK. Just keep the boost low on a stock motor, and you'd be smart to use good engine management software.

You could send a PM to BMSDean and see if he still has the turbo kit they built for the rally Reno he drove. Last I heard he still had it and was selling it for cheap. Haven't spoken to him in a while and don't know how often he frequents the forums. Things to note though, if you have an auto, you are very limited on power, IIRC 160WHP. For a manual, 200WHP. You could also cross shop parts from europe as they have a better selection of interchangeable parts for the 2.0L.

I was sure I read about it somewhere. Probably on the daewootech forums. It was the only reason I didn't buy the turbo from Dean when I messaged him. Seems that all of the turbo builds are on manuals. I only found limited information on doing it with an auto and no threads of a complete build on an auto. Sorry if I am mistaken on the auto numbers. Dean said that BMS was shooting for 180-200WHP with the kit, but that it could handle a lot more.
