Default Transmission Issues 07 Forenza

A few days ago while cruising down the freeway I noticed my Forenza will pop out of gear? or into neutral? the engine will REV but it doesn't move the car forward at all, ever since then it seems like the shifts are off or if it needs to downshift it will pop *rev* then finally hit the shift.. last night at the bank atm I put the car in park, the check engine light came on.. I drove it home and restarted it and the light went away. The car is scheduled to go in tomorrow to the dealer and I would just like to know what you guys think is going on, it almost acts like the transmission is slipping but it doesn't happen all the time.

ps. while the car is trying to shift, or reving the gear indicator on the dash is all scrambled..

Thanks everyone!

Range Sensor Confirmed! it troubles me that SOOO many Forenza's have this issue around the same mileage but no recall was ever sent out.

oh well

$106.00 parts and labor.

I had a similar issue. It sounds like the Transmission Range Sensor. It appears to be a very frequent issue with Forenzas. The part is about $50 at your local dealers. Depending on your skill with cars, it can be installed somewhat easily.

From what I can see in the service manual, replacing the switch itself isn't difficult. But calibrating it properly using the DW260-050 tool seems to be a whole different thing.

Unless a dealer would want want to bill me more than 1/2h of work to replace it, I would let them do it.

Warranty Time allowed: 0.3h
Standard: 0.4h

But they may try to add diagnostic charges on top of that :-(
