Default 02 Suzuki Esteem Wagon 1.8

Hello,

I've been having starting problems with my 02 esteem wagon 1.8. Have to pump the gas pedal excessively to get it to start and the run it for awhile before it idles. I've always noticed that the engine turns a little longer while starting then I would like and brought it into the dealership once cause I felt I was losing pressure along the fuel line, maybe my fuel pump seal. They insisted that was not happening even though they didn't check the actual fuel pump. I even pointed out the secret warranty of the fuel pump seal.

Today, it was a really hard start, pumping the pedal and then black exhaust coming out of the tail pipe.

Any suggestions other then the fuel pump seal? I know there is no fuel filter. Oil level is fine and air filter is fine. It has to be the fuel delivery system, just trying to pin point the problem ... thought if I posted here someone might have experience or insight.

Cheers,

Aaron

Pumping the gas pedal to help start a car is only supposed to work on older cars that do not have fuel injection, having black smoke coming out of the tail pipe on a fuel injected car is not a good thing, black smoke means that way to much gas is getting into the cylinders and is not all being burned so it comes out of the tail pipe as black soot.

Pumping the gas pedal is probably making the air/fuel ratio equalize to something that will let the engine start, your fuel pressure problem may not be a lack of fuel pressure it may be that you have too much fuel pressure due to a bad regulator and it is pushing too much gas through the fuel injectors.

I'm not sure what the fuel pressure should be on the 2002 (the dealer could tell you) that is the first thing I would check, you should have a fitting on or near the fuel injector rail that you can attach a gauge to.

Also scan the engine computer for error codes and then get back to us.

My check engine light was on at the beginning of September but I blame my brother for that. Whilst borrowing my car, he left the gas cap at a station and drove around for 4 days with no gas cap. The check engine light came on, he then put a used much older gas cap on that he found at a gas station. So when I retrieved the car, I replaced the gas cap and the check engine light went off after a couple of days.

The car was sitting for awhile before starting. About 2 weeks. But like I said, it's always been taking a few extra turns to start. Also, I have a K&N cone air filter on in place of the OEM filter.

I will get a code reader and check the codes too and post what I find.

You should be getting a rich exhaust code at least. Maybe a leaky fuel injector or a bad mass air flow sensor.

Default Dirty Mass Ar Flow Sensor

Sounds like you have a dirty mass air flow sensor.

Here is how to clean it.

1. Remove battery negative cable.

2. Disconnect Air Temperature Sensor connector, the (ATS) is located in the air inlet tube, the air inlet tube is the flexible rubber tube that connects from the air cleaner box to the throttle body, do not remove the ATS from the air inlet tube.

3. Loosen the steel band clamp from the air box side and from the throttle body side.

4. Remove air inlet tube and set aside.

5. Now you will be able to see into the throttle body, using a flashlight, you will be able to see into the throttle body inlet, look for dirt, oil or other debris on the filter screen and on the inside of the throttle body inlet.

6. Purchase an aerosol can of CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner From your local auto parts store.

7. Do not use any other cleaners or they will permanently damage the mass air flow sensor.

8. Do not remove the mass air flow sensor from the throttle body.

9. Spray a generous amount of CRC into the mass air flow sensor inlet and into the throttle body inlet.

10. Allow up to 20 min. for the spray to evaporate and dry.

11. Reassemble.

12. Connect negative battery cable last.

The K&N filter is an oil impregnated filter, oil droplets are weeping from this filter and are coating the electrical contacts in the mass air flow sensor contacts, this in turn sends an incorrect sensor reading to the cars computer, then the cars computer sends incorrect instructions to your vehicles different control systems ( fuel / ignition ).

hope this helps
