Default 96 esteem odb code 400

I have a 96 Suzuki Esteem 1.6L automatic. I got a check engine light the other day although it seems to be running fine. I recently replaced the catalytic converter maybe 6 months ago and now this. I cleaned the egr valve but it wasn't plugged or dirty. Anyone have any other advice? I ran the engine with the egr vac line off and it has vacuum, not a lot but it has vacuum.

Go to an autoparts store and get the code read, most do it for free. That will help narrow it down. Also make sure your gas cap is on tight, it is the most common cause of check engine lights.

I called my local Suzuki Service dept. he said that error code 400 probably had something to do with the emissions evaporation system, check all your vacuum lines and connectors to that gray box that is next to the intake manifold.

A common problem I have been noticing with the later models of Esteems is that little hole on the side of the intake manifold that the EGR valve is bolted to gets plugged up with goo and won't let the exhaust gas through which then causes the "Check Engine" light to come on. At least on the 1999 you should be able to take a long thin screw driver and pass it through this hole and tap the metal on the other side of the intake manifold, if you can't then it is plugged up.

But before you do anything I would take it somewhere (Autozone, etc.) and have it scanned for codes and post the exact error message that you are getting.
