Default Esteem Shifting problem

Hi I have a 01 Esteem 5 speed manual Well unfortunately I bought a car with a shifting issue, it does not feel like the engine or the trans but in the area of either the shifter itself or the shift linkage, 1st,3rd, and 5th seem fine but 2nd,4th, and reverse are in a unusual area. When I shift into 2nd I almost hit into the center counsel its like shifting into a obtuse angle same with 4th, and reverse. I am not familiar with the car and the shift linkage is covered as well as shifter, any ideas what it could be? thanks

I haven't taken anything apart yet but I am starting to think that its the shifter fork is there anything else that I can check before I start tearing apart the interior?

I need part number 6 the dealership does not sell it separately, what other models would have the same part?

This car was only made from 1995 to 2002 then it was discontinued so they may all be the same part, 99 to 02 are probably going to be the closest matches I would call around to your local wrecking yards they have cross reference data and should be able to tell you.

I've got the same problem on a '97 5sp. The rubber-bush that holds the gear-lever pivot has fallen apart.

Has anyone suffered the same fate and has anyone seen any aftermarket replacement?
Thanks .... Clem
