there is no adjustment. it uses a hydraulic tensioner to keep pressure on the chain. if its loose, you need to replace the tension and inspect the chain..

Angry cam chain adjustment - 1.8 Baleno

Thank you, LumpyLarry.
Not the news I wanted to hear - my cam chain sounds rattly (120,000 miles on this engine).

the esteems dont use a chian its a belt and its self ajusting. there only good for 100k but i put 200k on mine and it was still in good shape. don't attempt replacing unless you know what your doing. you have to suspend the front of the motor on blocks in order to get at the belt. 1.6L drive belt $65 labor $300 to $500.

Please don't post wrong info, the timing belt is NOT self adjusting.
1.6 uses a belt, 1.8 uses a chain.
Letting a timing belt go 200K miles on an interference motor is asking for trouble.

once again, the timing belt is NOT self adjusting. it uses spring tension for initial adjustmaent. once you lock the pully down, it will not move anymore.

Andysoch I have run across rattly chains many times, and every time its been the chain rubbing on something, probably a guide has broken, which is usually the case.
Shuz Loves Suzi, I don't know what kind of experience you have, I have over 25 yrs, a degree and a few ASEs, I never made a master tech due to my back.
A timing belt tensioner is sometimes self adjusting in that it pulls tension on the belt for the "initial" tension, then you tighten the adjuster down, it does not move after that, it does not self adjust unless you loosen it again and allow the spring pressure to reapply pressure to the belt.
But in my experience about half of those spring type actually worked correctly.
