Question Just Quit Running?

1997 Esteem. My everyday driver has 142,000 miles. I was driving and it just quit running. I cannot get it started again. It just turns over. I checked to see if the cams were spinning, they did so I don't beleive it is the timming belt. I checked to see if it was getting a spark and it is NOT. I pulled the plug wire and there was no spark jump when turning the engine over. Does anyone have any expierience with this kind of a problem. I checked the fuse boxes and they all seem ok. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance.

If they are able to check the ignition module, AKA igniter at the auto parts then I would pull that and have it tested. If you have an ohm meter you can check the coil and stator I believe.

The coil and igniter seem pretty pricy. Yikes! Good luck!

Not sure what CMP stands for, maybe the crank sensor? which would be the stator in this case I think. Sorry I'm not directly familiar with the 1.6 but that style ignition is nothing new.

Edit; no in this case it has a crank sensor, sorry.

Question After replacing CMP still no joy!

Cost to replace CMP was $114. Same symptoms as above. While driving the 95 Esteem last week it just quite. Engine cranks over but that's about it. Pulled Diagnostic Trouble Code 42 (Camshaft Position Sensor) or CMP sensor so it was just replaced, however the Esteem still does not want to start. For a DTC 42 manual says to check Signal rotor air gap. What is this? Next is to check CMP, but I'm guess that's ok because it's NEW! After that it talks about checking wire/connections to ECM. What's the best way to go about this? I hate electical problems.

Thanks in advance for any ideas

Good post Jetpilot. Replaced mine three weeks ago. My symptoms were intermittent hesitation and stalling at stops. Fortunately it would restart. All symptoms were getting worse. Pulled the code off the obd and took it to the dealer. They did not have a sensor in Toronto but would have to order from the Vancouver warehouse. Fortunately the dealer had a used one in stock for half price. Got me back on the road fast without the fee of a tow.
