Default Esteem Hard Starting & Stalling

1999 Esteem Wagon GL, 1.6l, 5spd manual

Hard to start.... takes several attempts to start (worse when hot). Then runs well while driven, but when idling it will stall. Have kept the A/C on (slightly increases idle rpm) and has helped a bit. Any ideas/thought? Air filter has been cleaned, plugs replaced, oil changes as required.... Maybe fuel filter???

A while back, the check engine light was always on. ODB reader pointed to O2 sensor.... I replaced the sensor and reset the light. Now the check engine light is gone but still have starting/stalling problems.

Anyone have/had these problems? Appreciate your feedback.

Thanks.

Replace the fuel filter, and then maybe look into getting the injectors cleaned.
Edit; if it has a replaceable FF, mine does not.

Had some problems like that on my 1998 Esteem 1.6 The IAC(Idle Air Control) motor gets all gunked up with exuast carbon and needs to be cleaned. It will get stuck from time to time causing symptoms like you speak of. This is generally done by removing the Throttle Body. DO NOT REMOVE THE IAC SPECIAL SCREWS!! OR YOU CAN DAMAGE THE IAC!! Youll know them when you see them they resemble Torx........Use the other ones. Spray some good carb cleaner and use a q-tip and clean the carbon out of the passages. Reassemble and this should take care of your dying problem.
