I didn't think the other side would go out this soon, I was planning to do it at a convenient time, but yesterday I look under and its busted now.

That happens, when one side goes out the other is often not far behind.

Thanks for posting that picture.

Never buy a refurb axle!!

I tried 4 of them before going to a junkyard and put a used one. (Problem gone)

I dont know whats the problem with the 1.8l axle but I have talked with a mechanic at a suzuki dealer and he told me its a really common problem with refurb axel (for 1.8l) they dont even try, they tell to owner to get some used ( brand new are 250$ each).

I've had problems with most all my refurbished axles, the common problem is wobble and vibration. And that dates back to 1990 when I did my first one. I think the problem is mixing worn out parts together.

Here are the boot kit numbers for future reference. (For me too, because my memory sux) The inners on the 5 speed are not the actual application, but I have used them and the fit is OK. Auto-Zone has these available to order, although their catalogs do not list them, I researched the numbers from Powertrain components, there numbers are the same except the prefix is "6" instead of "K".

2002 Esteem 1.8 5 speed
inner K-2121
Outer K-2235

2002 Esteem 1.8 Automatic
inner K-2234
outer K-2193

Where did you find new ones for $250 each?

When I realised my boot were thorn on my orignal axles I called the dealer. He told me that the boots were 90$ per axle and that new axle were around 250$ each.

Thats why a went to refurb axle (75$ each) but now after 3 tries I went to the junk yard and put a used one.

Working fine for now but need to order a boot kit (thank for the part number, I am gonna check with my auto part if he sell the same brand)

My book has cross reference in it. I may have to re-do mine I looked in the factory manual and I don't think I have the parts in right, think is I can't remember.

Take them out is cake, rebuilding them is a PITA, all that grease!

I'll have my camera taking pics along the way of critical parts.

And when I do my Esteem wagon I'll do that too.

Thanks for this thread, gonna install a new set of axles on my 2002 Wagon 1.8 liter, manual transmission Esteem. Just for those who may want to know, I purchased 100% new axles from an online auto parts store. The axles are EMPI part numbers 80-5811 (Passenger side) and 80-5818 (drivers side). The online store tech called EMPI for me to make sure that these are the correct fitment. Each axle was $95. If anyone needs the store link, let me know.
We'll see how easy the install is, Isuzuzuki man makes it look pretty simple.

I can't see how they can be 100% new for $95, is there a core charge?
The boot kit numbers are the same as mine, without the prefixes and post fixes, the four numbers 2235, 2234, 2121, 2193, are common in all brands.

Empi seems familiar, I thing BAP-Geon sells there stuff. Good info.
