My trusty '02 Esteem wagon GLX is acting funny at 65,000 miles. I've got my acceleration and peppiness until around 3,500 rpm in 1st, or under load in the taller gears. If I try to push full throttle in any gear, there is a rattling from the engine that is not evident at any other time. It seems that the sound is from the right front in the engine compartment and my ears tell me it's engine noise and not interior or ancillary equipment.
I changed the plugs about 20,000 miles ago and everything was great until recently. The car is lubed on schedule and I don't have any check engine light warnings.
Anyone have an educated guess what the problem is? Is it timing? If so, how can I make adjustments.
Might be spark knock.
Nice wagon, did the luggage rack come with the cross braces? Mine does not have those.
Its a GLX with a sunroof 55K miles, click the link in my sig.
I will check the new plugs for abnormal wear. If you think of anything else, let me know.
The cross racks are Suzuki OEM accessory parts available from your dealers catalogue. They set me back $180, but were well worth it compared to Yakima or other. I surf a lot and they hold up great to stacked boards and high speed driving. I don't suggest loading them down, but definitely some rugged little suckers. Keyed locks even.

Nice wagon yourself. I like the two-tone paint.
Thanks
Spark knock AKA detonation, AKA ping, it happens more under hot engine and load, try higher octane gas. Also make sure the timing is set right.
TY, the Wagon is the family car, like new inside and out, except I hate sunroofs.
Does yours have the cargo cover in the back, maybe that is opt equip too?

Thought that's what you were getting at. I'm gonna have to find some manuals and get to crackin' at the timing.
TY, Sunroofs do have their downfalls, but nothing like cruising on a nice California evening with the windows down and the roof open.
Yes, my wagon came with the rear cargo cover. I think it is funny that they would offer a cargo cover with clear rear windows. Seems like that would make it obvious you are trying to hide something in the back. That's part of the reason I got the rear 5-windows tinted in dark smoke limo tint, when the cargo cover is on now, you can't see anythhing beyond the front seats. The tint also helps with reducing mirror glare on the highway at night and keeping the sun off your passengers in the daytime. Especially useful when you have a lifted diesel with high intensity lights breathing down your neck.
Yea I am in process of tinting it, I have the back at 5%, the darkest you can get.
Its funny in Texas with tint laws, the inspection rule says the front can be no more than 35% all others can be anything, but the law say all sides with passengers must be 35%.
BTW I have 02 factory manuals for the Esteem, and a scanner.
