Has anyone ever had this problem? I have a 2000 esteem and it just started making this rattling noise. I took it to a dealer and they couldn't find it. My normal mechanic couldn't either. They both say there's nothing loose and noone knows where it's coming from. It has almost 121,000 miles on it. Could it be the timing chain, a pulley, ect...? Please help.
My guess is the timing chain guide, I think they are plastic. I looked at one with less miles and it had that same noise, long story I ended up helping the guy diagnose it, he had no clue.
Either the plastic breaks off and rubs or the chain is then able to rub metal, Nissan Sentras 88-90 had the same misfortune.
The fix is unfortunately a new chain and guide kit.
How do you get to it? I've worked on my cars prior to this one.
I assume you have a 1.8?
Pull the valve cover, you can see the top part and perhaps down in engine. The timing chain is in the front of the engine, I'm don't know the exact procedure without referring to my manual but basically you pull off the front part of the engine, similar to a timing belt.
There are two chains.
If that is indeed the problem I can scan that section in my manual.
Yes, it is a 1.8. Do you have a site where I can get the parts a bit cheaper than the dealership?
Well hmm I don't see any parts available at Auto-zone or parts-America and rock-auto, not available.
There are 3 chains in this motor, yikes, upper and lower timing and oil pump, all with chains and guides.
