I personally get Quaker State Synthetic or Pennzoil Synthetic when it is on sale, usually around $2/quart. I use 5W30 in my 2001, it is what the manual recommends and it is good for the cold winter temps in the Midwest.
So why would some people use 10w30 versus 5w30? Is there any problems if you had one type of oil in your car and topped it off with a different type of oil?
No not really, if you mixed them 50/50 you would just end up with something like 7.5W30. The "30" is what is important once the engine is warmed up, the leading number "5", "10", "etc.", is what the oil acts like when the engine is cold.
