Hello, I'm a current older subaru owner (92 legacy wagon) who has recently become quite interested in purchasing a Suzuki Esteem Wagon. I love the styling, the reviews, and the cargo space. I've yet to test drive one, but plan to soon.
I was wondering if people here could give me a bit of advice regarding things/problems to look for when purchasing a used (2000-2002) esteem. I am looking for the 1.8l engine, and preferably cruise control. I understand there are aftermarket kits to install cruise control on cars however though if necessary.
I looked at a 2002 esteem glx wagon loaded with goodies, all service records, 112 000 km. Asking $7900 (cdn). Problems include a crack in the paint on the hood (possibly patched), a repainted front right quarter panel (although apparently no accidents), and a little more scuffed interior than I would expect for something newer.
How much is rust an issue on these vehicles. I've found most light cars like these tend to rust out fast and easy.
How good is the auto trans? I've read it tends to upshift to the next gear a bit early (5000 rpm), although I'm not sure where peak power comes in the rpm band. I like manual transmission, but find an more auto appealing the older I get.
Thanks for any and all advice folks, maybe I'll be joining this forum regularly soon!
