I would suspect "clutch drag" - the clutch may not be disengaging fully.

Greetings! I was trained on the 1 1/2 ton Ford flatbed in the AF in 1970's. 1st gear was a starting gear, that is, you used it to get going with a heavy load, and as soon as you hit a fast walk, shift to second.
Downshifting for breaking and climbing steep grades was only done to second gear as the truck would stall before it would go into first.

Is the difficulty experienced from a standing position, or are you trying to down shift for breaking?

whenever the carry is still moving even at a very low speed, for example, im on the 2nd gear and i feel that first gear is required, i cannot shift to first unless i go full stop.

Greetings! Sounds about right. The Carry truck is a work truck, not high performance. I have an automatic, and I can down shift to second, but it dam near stops dead if I try first without stopping.

Greetings! I owned also an every van with rear engine, very hardly i use the ist gear even from full stop. I always used 2nd gear to 5th gear even with full passenger and the every can handled it better without any problem.

i was having the same problem with my carry (in my case i cant engage 1st gear or 2nd gear), in my case was a broken pin in the gear shift lever system, after the new pin, i works good. but this little truck have a truck short gear box (4 gears in my case) so the 1st gear will be always hard to engage.

When using the 1st gear(using Every Van rear engine), there would be a "jerking" of the engine if not pressing gas immediately. Results to stalling most of the time.

So question to both of you:

I've research about starting at 2nd gear and some answer was "Starting out in 2nd puts additional slip / friction (wear) on the clutch facings.".

So does starting on 2nd gear on Every Van in a general sense a good thing(just negligible enough)? Or is it a bad thing in the long run?

I stumbled on this thread because my tracker is sometimes difficult to engage 1st... Especially in very cold temps before the engine and transmission warms up...

I found at a stop if I push the clutch in and pop it into 5th before I put it in 1st it will go in easier. When I'm moving if I shift into 3rd then blip the throttle and attempt to engage 1st it seems to go much easier then if I try to go from 2nd to 1st. I don't know if that might help with your Suzuki Carry but it is something to try...

Greetings! Do you realize that you are defeating the transmission safety features?
1St gear is for heave load up hill starting to move. Once you are going, shift to second, and so on.
This transmission is not intended to be a braking down shift to that low of speed, and if you over ride it, you might break the little shift controls.
If you want a Euro car, BUY one! Do not expect a Suzuki to work like a sports car.

Also, how did you make 240 plus post since July this year? Did you piggy back on ALL your post?
