Default Suzuki Alto fuel gauge info pls

Hope some one can help, I have a 2002 suzuki alto 1 litre 3 door.
I was wondering if some one could tell me if the fuel gauge is supposed to fall to empty when the ebgine is turned off or if it stays at the level of fuel in the tank?
I cant remember what mine has previously done but at the mo its half way (which is about right for putting in £10 on Monday) but it stays there when i turn off and now im worried its supposed to fall.
Any help would be appreciated.
