Default New Brakes

I have to get new breakes put on this weekend. My mechanic needs me to buy the pads since he doesent carry them in stock. Pep Boys wants 24 for the front And 20 for the rear. Then my mechanic wants 250 to install them. Is this a good price or should i look elsewhere? Also could a first timer install breaks on this car? And if so what is the levl of difficulty?

Thanks,
Mike

I just did mine - '03 "s"

I'm a seasoned mechanic and it took me approx 3hrs. in my driveway - normally a 1-1/2hr job @ most.

They aren't hard to do until a caliper mount bolt snaps off.

If you have 4 wheel discs, it shouldn't take longer than 1-1/2 hrs. just to replace pads. (add 1/2hr if you have rear drums as I do)

If he's resurfacing rotors/drums he's got additional costs/labor & the $250 starts looking like a deal.

Get it in writing beforehand so you have (some?)leverage.

$50 for parts is reasonable for standard parts

If your not a good mechanic, this wouldn't be the car to learn on although I've seen alot worse.

Good luck, greg409

Thanks greg for the fast reply ya the front are disc and the back are drums so i guess i should probaly take this one to the shop. the rotors and drums shouldent have to be resurfaced i hope since this will only be the second time for the front and the first time for the rear. At least i hope they wont have to be resurfaced because the quote was only for install nothing more? Hopefully im right on them not having to be reserfeced any feed back? O ya almost forgot the car has 50,000 miles exactly today.

wow i'm sure you already have your brakes done, but i'm replying anyway...
i was worried about my brakes on my aerio a while ago too. my friend mike showed me how to do them. it's pretty easy. if you're able to find someone to show you that would help or you can look it up on ehow.com. it's a website that tells you how to do stuff. i'm a 26 year old girl and i change my own oil and now i know how to do my own brakes. =) if i were there i'd show you how to do them. and then you'd save a bunch of moneys.

Thanks for the site address and ya i already got them done. Found a local mechanic to do it for a lot cheaper. I believe it was 120 not sure off of the top of my head but i will deffinetly be installing them myself next time. Just another way to save myself some cash.
